Townson has a specialist knowledge of the Portland Stone in the Isle of Portland, Isle of Purbeck, Vale of Wardour and the Boulonnais. Charlie Wilkinson has kindly shown me various features in Coombefield North Quarry. Alan Holiday has provided photographs and information regarding conservation of Portland quarries, and this is much appreciated.

Quarrying - Portland Stone Firms

The Southwell quarry is situated along the south eastern coast of Portland. This limestone quarry extends along the east of Portland Bill road, from Southwell all the way to the Portland Bill Observatory. Southwell quarry has reserves of over 1,264,000m³ and will be worked in the future. This equates to over 63 years of quarrying or mining.

Using this technique, I modelled the folds of portland stone quarry with wool thread. I dyed wool with three natural dyes, extracted from bark, beetroot and onion skins. I tested the material further for its potential as a structural material by making yarn and felt. Using natural and artificial dye, I stained pieces of portland stone.
